Implants vs. Dentures
Beverly Hills and Los Angeles, CA

Your own natural, well-cared for teeth are the best you can possibly have. But when you lose a tooth, it is best to replace it with a non-removable restoration. With the replacement of a single tooth, a permanent bridge will give you great results. But if you have to replace two or more teeth in a row, or your missing teeth are scattered throughout your mouth, then dental implants are ideal. In both cases, you can opt for the less expensive dentures or partial dentures.
Statistics reveal that almost 70% of adults between the ages of 35 and 44 have lost at least one permanent tooth. By the time they reach 74 years old, more than 25 percent of adults have lost all of their permanent teeth. This can be the result of:
- An accident
- A failed root canal
- Tooth decay
- Gum disease
If you need to have false teeth, you have a choice of choosing either dentures or dental implants. Unlike years ago, when you only could choose dentures, today you have choices. Below are some pros and cons of both dentures and dental implants:
Pros of dentures
Dentures are the most inexpensive option. They fit into your mouth easily and then have to be removed and soaked in cleansing solution overnight. They are usually covered by dental insurance.
Cons of dentures
Dentures are not permanent. You must continue having them refitted and get new plates periodically. A set of dentures will usually last a year or two until they need to be replaced. They are affixed to your teeth with adhesive glue, which means that you can not eat some foods—like corn on the cob, for example.
Pros of dental implants
Though more expensive, dental implants are permanent and look just like your natural teeth. They never have to be replaced and you can eat anything that you want. You treat dental implants like your real teeth—brushing and flossing as usual. If you break a tooth, it is replaced with a crown, just as your real tooth is. With dental implants, you never have to worry about taking them out to clean them, and nobody will see you without your teeth.
Cons of dental implants
While dental implants cost more initially, this cost must be compared to that of denture upkeep for the rest of your life. Since dental implants are permanent, you do not have to keep getting new sets made. Dental implants are also covered by many dental insurance plans.
The decision to opt for dental implants is a personal decision. It depends on your individual situation, your oral goals and how much you are willing to spend.
